Meet The Local Island Communities

Our restoration process has been developed in partnership with the island communities of Badi and Bontosua in the Spermonde Archipelago, Indonesia. Their trust, hospitality and leadership has been instrumental in us helping them to restore their coral reefs. Hope Reef, built off the coast of Bontosua, is the result of a unique collaboration with that community. Their dedication is at the heart of all the success achieved so far.

We are pleased the communities have appointed ambassadors representing key social groups (e.g. youth, women, fishermen) on the islands. We will continue to support the initiatives they identify and lead, to help improve their reef-based livelihoods. We also want to take this opportunity to once again thank these communities for their support in making this happen.

Rangkaian kegiatan restorasi ini merupakan kerja nyata bersama dengan masyarakat di Pulau Badi dan Pulau Bontosua, yang terletak di Kepulauan Spermonde. Proceeds from the SHEBA^® channel that grows coral on YouTube will be donated to our partner, The Nature Conservancy, to support coral reef restoration projects.

The Nature Conservancy is a global conservation organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. Guided by science, they create innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world's toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together.

They are tackling climate change, conserving lands, waters and oceans at an unprecedented scale, providing food and water sustainably and helping make cities more sustainable. Working in 72 countries and territories: 38 by direct conservation impact and 34 through partners, they use a collaborative approach that engages local communities, governments, the private sector, and other partners.

Geographic

As the world’s leading visual storytellers, National Geographic helps tell our story of Sheba Hope Reef through a host of unique pieces of content. As storytelling partner, this iconic global brand will drive awareness of coral reef restoration and encourage others to join our cause.

Watch out for a bespoke branded content HQ on www.nationalgeographic.com as well as a National Geographic video complete with footage from Hope Reef. The video will highlight the destruction of reefs over the years, explain why coral is important, and delve into the Hope Reef project.

Google

We are proud of this first-of-its-kind partnership between Mars and Google. The Hope Reef project features innovative uses of an array of Google products, including the YouTube channel that grows coral, updated Google Earth satellite footage over the reef location, the ability to explore the pin, as well as the beautifully interactive underwater Street View to allow remote visitors to navigate their way through the coral.

All of this helps make Hope Reef truly accessible from across the world, while staying true to Google’s sustainability pledge to: ‘Build technology that helps people do more for the planet.’

We’ve worked with certification programs and seafood industry experts to make our fish buying practices more sustainable. Driving change at scale is not possible alone, Mars Petcare has therefore been working closely with certification programs and fish experts at Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) to help develop our sourcing strategy, increase transparency in our supply chain and take better action to protect oceans.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch

Monterey Bay Aquarium and Mars Petcare work together to help build a more sustainable future for the fishing industry. Mars Petcare relies on the expert Seafood Watch recommendations to guide sourcing strategies. Seafood Watch works with some of the world’s largest seafood suppliers to promote more environmentally sustainable fisheries and aquaculture operations.
